What to serve with waffles
Don’t they always say breakfast is the most important meal of the day – why not make it the most delicious, too? Homemade cooked waffles can be enjoyed so many ways such as a sweet treat or just as a special breakfast. You don’t need a fancy waffle maker. But what you do need is some of the best waffle toppings or side dishes to take your waffle game to new levels.
Another fun way to go the extra mile and enjoy the perfect waffle is to create a diy waffle bar. Load it up with all of your favorite waffle toppings such as chocolate sauce, fruit compote, whipped cream and add some savory toppings for variety.
How to make homemade waffles from scratch
Making homemade waffles from scratch is easier than you think and most likely, you probably have everything on hand already. So whether you’re team waffle for the crunchy texture or a chewy texture, I have a few ideas for you such as my Perfectly Chewy Ube Mochi Waffles, Matcha Waffles, Fruity Pebble Waffles, Banana Pumpkin Waffles or my Fruit Loop Mochi Waffles. And- if you’re looking for a waffle that doesn’t use any added sugars, check out these Pumpkin Seed and Almond Flour Waffles.

Sweet toppings for waffles
If you have a sweet tooth, then this is for you!
- Of course a simple drizzle of maple syrup never gets old or a delicious slice of butter with powdered sugar sprinkled on top.
- Indulge in the classic combination of fresh strawberries and whipped cream atop a warm, fluffy waffle for a decadent and delicious breakfast or brunch option.
- Or satisfy your dessert cravings with a waffle sundae, complete with a scoop of ice cream, chocolate syrup and sprinkles. These sweet waffle creations are perfect for those who prefer their breakfast treats on the sweeter side.
- Another good idea (and a little healthier) is to add a dollop of Greek yogurt on top and fresh berries or spoonful of lemon curd.

Savory waffle toppings
Some savory waffle toppings are:
- Parmesan cheese.
- Cheddar cheese and chives ( or other fresh herbs).
- Almond butter or peanut butter.
- And for hearty meal, try a fried egg, crispy bacon or fried chicken. Cooked bacon can be placed inside the waffle batter as well.
- You can even make a waffle sandwich!
How to freeze homemade waffles
What I love about homemade waffles is that you can make a big batch and freeze them. The easiest way to do this is once they come off the waffle iron, place them on either a cooling rack or a sheet pan lined with parchment paper. Do not stack the waffles, as this will make them soggy. Let the waffles cool completely and then either store them in a freezer safe air tight container wrapped in parchment paper or in a freezer safe zip lock. You can store them in the freezer for up to 3 months.
How to reheat frozen waffles
Place the waffles on a microwave safe dish and microwave for about 45 seconds. You can also reheat frozen waffles in a toaster oven.
