What is Shawarma
Shawarma is a Middle Eastern dish that is usually made with chicken, beef or lamb. The meat is slow roasted on a vertical rotisserie spit and then shaved off. This is a popular street food and can be served on top of warm pita bread or with rice and vegetables.
Ingredients for this Shawarma Seasoning recipe

- Coriander. Coriander, cumin and turmeric all add an earthy flavor to this shawarma spice blend.
- Cumin. This is the main ingredient of shawarma. It pulls together all the other aromatic flavors.
- Sweet Paprika. Smoked paprika works too.
- Cinnamon. Cinnamon add warmth and sweetness to the spice rub. Plus it’s great for our blood sugar.
- Ginger.
- Turmeric.
- Aleppo. Aleppo pepper adds mild heat with a little bit of smokiness. If it’s not available to you, replace it with ancho chili pepper, a mix of cayenne and smoked paprika or use a touch of red pepper flakes. (Red pepper flakes are more spicy though. )
- Cardamom.
Shawarma seasonings have many different variations. Other spices can be used such as nutmeg, garlic powder, cayenne pepper or black pepper.
