Why this recipe for All Purpose Seasoning works

  • One big benefit to making your own homemade seasoning blends is that you can control the salt! Just like in my Dry Enchilada Spice Mix and in my Zesty Italian Seasoning, adding salt is optional. Plus there are no extra additives or hidden sugars.
  • Make a small batch to use right away or make a a big batch to use later.

Ingredients

A white square plate displays an assortment of six colorful ground spices arranged in a circle to make all purpose seasoning. A small gold spoon rests beside the plate on a textured beige surface.
  • Dried parsley flakes. Dried parsley is a mild herb that has great texture, especially if you are using this all purpose seasoning mix as a dry rub.
  • Dried basil. This has sweet undertones and adds depth to the spice mix.
  • Ground cumin. Although cumin isn’t spicy, it adds a nice smokiness.
  • Paprika. I personally think paprika should be in every spice cabinet! This is one of my favorite spices to use!
  • Aleppo pepper. Aleppo pepper is a staple in Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cooking. It’s one of the key spices in my Homemade Za’atar Spice Blend and gives mild heat with a touch of fruitiness. If you can not locate Aleppo pepper, you can use cayenne pepper.
  • Onion powder. Onion powder is a foundational spice especially in an all purpose blend seasoning. You can also use onion flakes and that will also add more texture.
  • Garlic powder. Garlic powder makes everything better!
  • Black pepper.
  • Kosher salt. (optional) If you are going to use kosher salt in this mix, I recommend 1/2 to 1 teaspoon only. Depending on what you are using this in, extra salt may already be in other ingredients such as bacon or dairy so much extra salt is needed.

How to make All Purpose Seasoning

Step One: Start with gathering all of your spices, a measuring spoon and a small bowl.

Step Two: Measure out each amount  and place into the bowl. Stir with small spoon or whisk.

Step Three: Use right away for cooking or store in an airtight container.

How to store homemade seasonings

When storing your own seasoning mixes (or even store-bought seasoning), you will want to use an airtight container. I suggest a glass container or small mason jar or other spice jar. Store in a dark place at room temperature, away from the heat and direct sunlight. Homemade spices can last about 6 months or even longer but I suggest making only a little bit ( or the amount in this recipe) for freshness purposes.

Helpful tips for this All Purpose Spice Blend

My main tip for spices, is that if you aren’t going through them fast enough, purchase a smaller size. Some seasonings seem appealing at Costco, but truth is, if the spices sit over time, they lose flavor. Next time you are in the spice aisle, grab the smaller bottle of individual spices.

Always store seasonings in a cool dry place.

Serving suggestions for this All Purpose Seasoning Blend
