I’ve been making my own spice mixes for years and some of my go-to’s are my Enchilada Spice Mix, All Purpose Seasoning, Mediterranean Spice Mix, and my Za’atar Spice Blend. Ras el hangout can vary by region but mine is heavy on the turmeric and cumin for warmth and anti-inflammatory reasons.

Why this recipe works

Ingredients you’ll need for this Ras el Hanout Spice

A white plate on a beige surface holds piles of various spices, each labeled: coriander, cumin, paprika, cinnamon, sesame seeds, ginger, turmeric, red chili flakes, nutmeg, black pepper, and kosher salt.
  • Cumin. Cumin adds depth and richness to this spice mix.
  • Turmeric. Known for its vibrant golden color warmth, turmeric adds anti-inflammatory benefits to this blend.
  • Black pepper. The curcumin in the turmeric absorbs much better when paired with black pepper.
  • Coriander. Coriander lightens the flavor of the spice blend just a little.
  • Cinnamon. Cinnamon gives a subtle sweetness and warmth to Moroccan cooking.
  • Paprika. This recipe uses sweet paprika, which gives a little sweetness.
  • Kosher salt. Salt is always optional in cooking but it helps enhance the flavors of all the spices.
  • Ground ginger. Ginger complements spices such as the turmeric and cinnamon.
  • Sesame seeds. Sesame seeds gives a slight nuttiness and adds texture to this mix.
  • Nutmeg. Nutmeg is aromatic and helps round out the flavors of this Ras el Hanout.
  • Crushed red peppers. The perfect addition for a little heat.
