Why this Mediterranean spice recipe works

  • Versatile. Sprinkle the Mediterranean blend spices on Sheet Pan dinners, vegetables, seafood or soups.
  • Cleaner than store-bought brands. Making your own spice at home means you control the sodium and whatever else is in it. You can customize it to your liking.
  • Saves money. Buying multiple spice blends can add up. Making your own at home saves money when you learn how to blend pantry staples.

Ingredients needed

A bowl containing separated piles of Mediterranean Spice Mix ingredients—oregano, sumac, onion powder, cumin, paprika, garlic powder, and kosher salt—arranged on a light textured surface.
  • Dried oregano. This herbaceous Mediterranean staple adds balance to the cumin and paprika.
  • Garlic powder. Garlic powder helps enhance the flavors of proteins and vegetbales.
  • Paprika. Adds a litttle warmth and a very subtle sweetness.
  • Cumin. Cumin adds smokiness to this spice blend.
  • Onion powder. Onion powder gives a nice balance.
  • Sumac. Sumac adds brightness to this mix. It takes on an acidic lemony taste. If you can’t find sumac, try adding fresh lemon juice or lemon zest to your dish.
  • Kosher salt. The salt can be left out or you can always use less if you need low sodium.

Helpful tips

  • Don’t be shy with spices. Measure on the generous side.
  • Store your spice mix in a cool, dry spot. Like a cabinet away from any heat.
  • While homemade spice blends stay flavorful for months, mixing up smaller batches ensures the flavors will be aromatic and bright for your dishes.
  • For the best flavor, use fresh spices. If spices sit for too long, they lose their potency and flavor.
