Using whole wheat bread for french toast gives this meal a little wholesomeness without sacrificing any of the texture and flavor. Plus with stuffed french toast, you can add a creamy filling or a nut butter filling. Trust me when I say your kids won’t know you are sneaking in extra fiber.

Why this recipe works

Ingredients for this Stuffed Whole Wheat Bread French Toast

ingredients of stuffed whole wheat french toast.
  • Unsalted butter. Nonstick spray, olive oil or coconut oil can be used as well.
  • Whole-wheat bread. The base of this recipe can be used on any bread such as Texas toast, gluten free bread, brioche or white bread.
  • Milk. I use 2% but skim milk can be used.
  • Large eggs.
  • Cinnamon, cardamom and nutmeg. This combo gives extra flavor to the french toast. You can omit the cardamom and nutmeg and add in extra cinnamon as well.
  • Fruit jam or fruit spread. I use strawberry jam. Any flavor will work.
  • Maple syrup. Optional garnish.
  • Fresh strawberries. Optional garnish.

How to make this Whole Wheat French Toast

Four-step collage for a stuffed French toast recipe: 1) Two slices of bread with jelly on a plate; 2) Plain bread slice on a plate; 3) Bread soaking in cinnamon batter in a baking dish; 4) Another slice soaking in the batter.

Step One: In a large bowl, combine eggs and milk. Add in the spices gently combine.

Step Two: Using 2 slices of bread, spread the jam on one side on each slice of bread and then join the bread together like a sandwich.

Step Three: Dip the bread into egg mixture and evenly coat.

Step Four: Melt 1 tablespoon of butter into a large skillet over medium heat. Add the sandwich to the skillet and let it cook until golden brown, about 3 minutes. Adjust heat to low if needed. Then gently flip over to cook the other side.

Step Five: Remove and let it cool on a sheet pan for a few minutes.

Step Six: Serve immediately with maple syrup or other optional toppings such as fresh berries, whip cream, powdered sugar or additional butter.

Storing leftover french toast

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days. You can freeze french toast by placing the sandwiches on a sheet pan to cool then storing a freezer safe container for up to 3 months. Reheat french toast in the microwave for about 1 minute. Or warm in an oven or toaster oven to get some texture.

Helpful tips

  • To avoid soggy french toast, soak one sandwich at a time and put it directly into egg milk mixture. Using a shallow dish or pie pan helps so it absorbs evenly.
  • You can make this recipe without adding the jam or stuffing it altogether. When I recipe tested, my family and I preferred the texture better of having the bread “sandwiched” as it resembled the thickness of traditional brioche.
  • Although I sometimes add a little bit of sugar to my egg and milk mixture but since the jam is sweet, I didn’t think the extra sugar was needed.
  • This recipe can be used with regular white sandwich or whole grain bread.
  • As you cook, watch the butter carefully and don’t let it burn. A griddle or non stick pan will give you the best results and you can always swap butter for non stick cooking spray.

How to dry out bread for french toast

The best bread for french toast is typically stale bread or heartier breads.  While whole wheat bread can be more of a soft bread, placing the bread in the fridge for a couple of days helps with the texture.

Another option is to dry the bread out in the oven. Set your oven on a low temperature and place the bread on a baking sheet and bake it for about 10- 15 minutes. You can also leave the bread on your counter for a day and let it dry out naturally with the air. Each method works well, choose what works best for you.

Serving suggestions or alternatives for this whole wheat bread french toast recipe

  • There are so many delicious options with whole wheat french toast. You can use any flavor of jam such as strawberry, raspberry, blueberry or lingonberry.
  • For something fresh, serve french toast with fresh fruit. Or add sliced bananas on top for a real treat! You can also addin a layer of peanut butter for richness.
  • Instead of regular milk, use havy cream, half and half or plant based milk such as almond milk.
  • For more texture, garnish with chopped nuts such as slivered almonds, walnut or pecans.
  • If you prefer a simple spice profile, make it with cinnamon only. You can also stir in brown or white sugar for a sweeter touch. Lastly, use egg whites only for lighter touch.
