Smoothies are one of the ways I get my husband and children to eat kale! Green smoothie recipes are always tasty and nutritious. Plus it’s the easiest way to bump up my vitamins on some days.

Why this recipe works

Ingredients you’ll need

strawberry banana kale smoothie ingredients
  • Frozen strawberries. If in season, you can use fresh strawberries but add in ice cubes for texture and temperature.
  • Raw kale. It has a mild taste once it’s blended. Feel free to use more or less of it. Bagged kale that is already chopped and ready to use.
  • Banana. Banana’s are good in everything especially in recipes like my High Protein Acai Bowl. Overripe bananas are the best. This will work as a natural sweetener.
  • Coconut water. This Strawberry Banana Kale Smoothie recipe uses coconut water with no sugar added.  I really like Costco’s Kirkland Brand as it’s high quality and a great price.
  • Vegan protein powder. I like to use a vanilla protein powder that is plant based from the brand Truvani.

How to make a Kale Strawberry Banana Smoothie

Step One: Using a nutri blender or a regular high powered blender, place in the frozen strawberries, kale and banana. Add the protein powder.

Step Two: Pour in the coconut water and blend for about 30-45 seconds until well combined. Pour into a tall glass and enjoy immediately.

Helpful tips

  • For meal prep- make a smoothie pack ahead of time and have it ready to go . Place banana, kale and strawberries (or any fresh fruit) into a freezer safe ziplock bag and freeze it. Pull it out of the freezer and add in the coconut water and protein powder to the blender.
  • From recipe testing this and some of my other smoothie recipes, I noticed that if I add a whole scoop of protein, even if it is a high quality brand, I still notice a bit of grittiness. Adding a whole scoop of protein is optional but I find using only a hefty tablespoon of it to be the sweet spot for taste and texture.

Serving suggestions this Kale Strawberry Banana Smoothie recipe

There are many ways to customize smoothies.  Here are suggestions:

  • Make it with other non-dairy milk such as oat milk, coconut milk, or almond milk would work. Or try orange juice or pineapple.
  • Switch out the berries or use fresh berries if in season.
  • Add extra fiber to this green strawberry banana smoothie with chia seeds or flax seeds.
  • Spinach and broccoli work are nice green additions.
  • If dairy isn’t an issue, greek yogurt will add creaminess and more protein.
  • Peanut butter or almond butter can be added just like in this Kale Berry Smoothie.
